Dear Families, Students and Friends,
Welcome to the Hueneme Elementary School District 2017-2018 school year! I hope you and your family had an exciting and restful summer break. Our department is looking forward to seeing the happy faces of our returning students and meeting those students new to our District as well. We have some wonderful new menu items that I’m sure our students are going to love!

As we continue implementing the new portions of the Healthy Hunger Free Kids Act of 2010, there are a few things we want families and our students to be aware of. The 1/2 cup requirement of fruit or vegetable each day for lunch is still in effect and now expands to breakfast. Though we’ve always offered fruit for breakfast, it will now be a requirement to take a 1/2 cup serving.

Each day for breakfast the students are offered an entrée of the day, two fruit options and milk. Students are required to take the entrée of the day, a 1/2 cup serving of fruit (which can be 100% whole fruit juice) and have a choice of taking the second fruit option and/or milk.

For lunch, students are offered each of the 5 food group components, meat or meat alternate, grain, vegetable, fruit and milk. Students are required to take 3 out of the 5 components and one of those components must be a 1/2 cup of fruit or vegetable. Most of our lunch entrées contain the meat and grain component. Students may take up to all five of the components should they choose to do so. We encourage our students to fill half their plate with a variety of fruits and vegetables to build a healthy meal. Students who learn to make healthy choices at a young age continue making those same healthy choices for a lifetime! For more information on the My Plate campaign, please visit

Thank you for helping to encourage your children and our students to make healthy choices! If you have any questions, concerns or even suggestions, please feel free to contact me at any time.

Kindest Regards,

Joanna Carino
